The first census

God commands a census of Israel’s tribes. Each tribe is counted and organized by number and position around the Tabernacle for travel and camp formation.

The Levites

Levites are set apart for priestly duties. God assigns them to care for the Tabernacle, with specific tasks given to each Levitical clan.

Part 5.3

Tabernacle dedication

God gives laws on purity, restitution, and the Nazirite vow. The Tabernacle is dedicated with offerings from each tribal leader over twelve days.

Part 5.4

Moving on

Levites are consecrated. Passover is observed. God guides Israel with a cloud and fire. The tribes begin their orderly journey from Sinai, led by Judah.

Trouble in the camp

Moses invites Hobab to join Israel. The people complain; God responds with fire and quail. Miriam and Aaron criticize Moses—Miriam is struck with leprosy and healed.

Part 5.6

Spies and rebellions

Spies scout Canaan; most report fearfully, causing Israel to rebel. God punishes them with 40 years in the wilderness.

Balaam and Balak

Balak, king of Moab, hires Balaam to curse Israel. God prevents it, turning curses into blessings. Balaam advises Moab to entice Israel into sin.
